In the mid-Edo period, a decree was issued prohibiting luxury goods and flashy clothing. Within these restrictions, it became fashionable for the common people to enjoy the subtle differences in colour. Gin-nezumi (silver grey) was one of the colours that were allowed, and it became very popular.
